Is the iPad Pro Still the Tablet for You in 2018?
By Graeme Messina | December 15, 2018
Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Battery Life 4/5
iPads are the benchmark that tablets are measured against, so it is no surprise that the latest addition to the iPad stable is a proper device that should be taken seriously. It is a nippy device that loads apps and media lightning fast with a screen that is easy on the eyes and is highly detailed. It is very thin with good battery life too, and the new pencil is a winner.
The bad things are there, but not too much of a deal breaker when looked at overall. The normal problem remains with iOS, in that there are software limitations in the Apple ecosystem. There are apps that can do almost anything that you would need, but it is certainly no desktop. There is also no headphone jack, so your listening devices will be limited.
Is it for you?
The new Apple iPad Pro 2018 model is sleek, well refined device with hardware that sets it apart from its competitors. The Pro model comes with a stylus device called Pencil, and the screen adjusts the refresh rate to help aid the responsiveness of the screen.
Meet the Apple iPad Pro 2018 12.9"
Apple has created a worthy successor in the iPad Pro 2018 12.9”. It performs well and looks great. Battery life is decent, and the speed and overall performance of the device are some of the main attractions with this device.
What we like
Apple has redesigned the iPad Pro to perform even better than the previous generation, which says a lot. Under the hood lies a lightning fast A12X Bionic chipset, and there is also a USB type C connector for charging. The new design also makes the unit easier to hold too, which is good for ergonomics and comfort.
The Apple Pencil is also a winner, being accurate and easy to use. The Liquid Retina display has a screen resolution of 2732x2048, which is highly detailed for the size of the screen. There’s a 7MP front facing camera that helps with the FaceID function of the iPad. The rear facing camera is a 12MP unit, which is good enough for general photography and picture snapping. Apple always manages to create devices with excellent photographic capabilities, and the new iPad is no exception.
What we don’t like
The obvious item that is missing is the headphone jack. This isn’t a deal breaker for many people, but it will change the way that you interact with your music and streaming media because you will need a Bluetooth headset. Some apps do not yet fully use the whole area of the screen, making the black border around the app look like a first generation iPad bezel, which doesn’t look great.
Should you buy it?
If you need a new tablet, then this could definitely be the device for you. There are many things that will influence how you feel about this device, the main one is the available software that is downloadable from Apple’s online repository of applications. The basic functions that you need the device to perform will also be a massive consideration for you to think about. If you need to design or create art with a stylus, then this could be a great professional device that is easy to take with you.
