Brother MFC-J825DW Review

The Brother MFC-J825DW is a 4-in-1 device with print, scan, copy and fax capability with print speeds up to 35 ppm, automatic duplexing, CD/DVD/Blu-ray printing, web-connected applications, 3.3-inch color touch screen and built-in memory card reader. It makes a great addition to a small or home office with easy access to Facebook, Picasa Web Albums, Flickr, Google Docs, and Evernote accounts. You can also print directly onto printable CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs without hassle. The MFC-J825DW is still pretty neatly designed considering that it crams a printer, scanner, copier and fax machine into its compact black chassis. It measures about 180 x 405 x 378 mm, so it’s a good choice if you need a versatile multifunction printer for a small office. It even includes a 15-page automatic document feeder that folds flat onto the top of the unit when it’s not in use. There's a mixture of buttons and a touchscreen on the front. The controls are intuitive and easy to use. You can set how quickly you want the machine to go into standby mode and given how responsive the printer is, you won't have any qualms about setting this value quite low. Setting up is mercifully quick and easy. The four cartridges are straightforward to install as you simply open a door on the front-right of the printer and click them in. The slots are spring loaded, so you don't have to mess around with any latches. This model has a USB port, along with Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The Ethernet and USB ports are oddly placed -- you have to lift up the scanner mechanism to get at them and then trail the leads out the back of the machine through a small channel. However, most people will probably connect their computer to the printer via Wi-Fi. Brother also offers its iPrint&Scan app for iOS and Android devices. This allows you to send photos and documents over Wi-Fi directly to the printer. On top of the scanner is an automatic document feeder that can handle up to 20 sheets at a time. You can quickly scan or fax multi-page documents without having to manually handle each one. However, it doesn't support duplexing so it can't be used to automatically scan both sides of a page. The scanner produces good results, capturing fine levels of detail and natural colors. It's speedy too. This helps when it comes to photocopying as this model managed to copy a black and white test sheet in just 18 seconds. This is a pacey model when it comes to printing. A 10-page black and white text document took a speedy 1 minute and 7 seconds to complete. The printer also has a duplexer and managed to pump out five double-sides pages of the same document in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Color printing is also fast. It completed a 10-page colour business presentation in 2 minutes and 27 seconds. The 10-page graphics test took 2 minutes and 3 seconds. Printing a 4x6-inch snap took 52 seconds. These are all highly respectable times for a printer in this class. When it comes to print quality, the MFC-J825DW produces mixed results. Text wasn't as clean. There was noticeable feathering, especially on bolded-up text at smaller font sizes. It did manage to avoid banding on large blocks of color in a business presentation, but colors on the whole were tame, lacking the vibrancy that you get on many competitor models. Not just of color graphics, but also of photo prints. What Brother crammed into this little dynamo is impressive. For small and home offices that need occasional color printing and light document output on a very tight budget, the Brother MFC-J825DW should be considered.
