Canon PowerShot SX530 HS Review

Weighing in at 15.6 ounces and measuring 3.2 by 4.7 by 3.6 inches, the SX530 is well one of the smallest cameras that come with the 50X zoom. It features a huge non-detachable lens that protrudes from the body. It has an impressive field of view which is ideal for capturing wide-angle landscapes and also enables you to zoom on distant objects. Also featured is a more than adequate optical stabilization system that refines the image quality and enables shutter speeds as large as 1/50-second when zoomed all the way in. The f-stop ranges from f/3.4 to the narrower f/6.5 at the wide end and maximum zoom range respectively. The camera can however be slow to focus when zoomed all the way in.

The Canon PowerShot SX530 offers a 50X optical zoom ratio as well as a 100X digital Zoom-Plus. A 16-megapixel image sensor, 1080p video support and in-built Wi-Fi and NFC make up an impressive array of features. It doesn’t however, have an electronic view finder (EVF), which is sad.

The absence of the EVF means that you have to use the rear LCD to frame images. The deep handgrip provided will help steady the camera as you try to frame an image, but the EVF is always preferred. The fixed 3-inch LCD of the SX530 does provide good viewing angles; and at 461 k-dot resolution, it is sharp enough for the task. At the front top of the handgrip lie the shutter and zoom control; the camera is designed such that while the middle finger is comfortably on the handgrip, the fore finger is at the shutter control. Be careful as you take a shot as the shutter button requires some firm pressing and this may cause the camera to shift a bit; impacting negatively on the framing. This may especially be evident when using slow shutter speeds. Using the self-timer may provide a solution as the camera has time to steady.

The SX530 has a variety of shooting modes to choose from. A scrolling button placed behind the shutter release button has various functions depending on the shooting mode enabled. In aperture and shutter priority, it controls the aperture and shutter speeds respectively while in full manual, it can be altered to control any thanks to an exposure compensation button.

The left side of the camera bears two buttons. The first one is a framing assist button that widens the field of view when you hold down on it and returns the camera to the original zoom position when released. The SX530 also has a feature where subjects can be framed for portraiture; and pressing this button without holding it down selects the various subject portraitures. You will find a face, upper body and full body types to select from. The second button on the left side is useful for motion photography as it works in conjunction with the stabilization system to lock onto moving objects. The dedicated video recording button is placed on the rear; so is the usual four-way controller (with that center function button), the dedicated Wi-Fi button, the playback button and finally the menu button.

Getting back to the in-built Wi-Fi feature; you can connect your storage device to a Wi-Fi network that the camera broadcasts and easily transfers the files. Devices with NFC are in a better position since this camera has an NFC sensor.

Like some other Canon Compacts, the SX530 has the creative shot feature which when activated, six pictures are taken from a single press of the shutter. The first one is the picture you framed while the other five have different artistic filters applied automatically.

  • The Good :
Framing assist feature integrated Wi-Fi and NFC sensors 50X zoom ratio
  • The Bad :
Lacks Electronic view finder (EVF) relatively pricy HD limited to just 1080p slow to focus when completely zoomed
