Fujifilm X70 Review

Key features

Fujifilm X70 is a compact camera, the first from the company with a touchscreen. The camera has a wide range of features including 16.3Mp X-Trans CMOS II APS-C sensor, a fixed 28mm F2.8 lens, a 77-point hybrid autofocus system, a digital 35mm and 50mm teleconverter that you can upscale to full-resolution and electronic and mechanical shutters. The LCD touchscreen is 3" in size and has a tilting feature. The physical controls are many in number and help you adjust aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation. The camera can connect using Wi-Fi for easy sharing of files.

Introduction

When it comes to cameras and camera accessories, Fujifilm is one name that always comes to mind. Fujifilm X70 is an all-metallic compact camera that allows you to capture the images of your choice with its fixed lens. This camera is loved both by amateur and professionals thanks to the large sensor that captures excellent images. The design is nice and the buttons are easily accessible. The tilting touchscreen is a delight but for the fact that its performance leaves you wanting. Files can be easily shared by connecting the camera to Wi-Fi.

What is the design ?

Fujifilm X70 has a nice design but is not the smallest camera around – this means you will find it difficult to accommodate it inside your pocket. Some may be disappointed that it doesn’t have a viewfinder, but when they start using the camera, they will find that the absence of the viewfinder is a boon in disguise. As per Fujifilm, this camera has a rangefinder inspired design.

What is the performance ?

Fujifilm X70 offers decent performance but there is room for improvement at f5.6. The Hybrid AF system from Fujifilm is there in this camera and thus, the camera is able to detect phase and contrast quite accurately. The touchscreen performance is a bit disappointing but you can complete an entire shoot without even touching it. The dials and the buttons are easy to operate and you can even customize eight of these buttons. The fixed lens is a slight challenge but for professional photographers. Overall, the performance of the camera leaves you in no doubt that it is a good device to have with you.

What is the image quality ?

Fujifilm X70 may be small in size but it does offer your DSLR-quality images. In JPEG mode, a fair amount of detail is captured while maintaining the base ISO. Fujifilm claims that the X-trans array in this camera is not prone to much moiré and the test results show that. The colour details are accurate and pleasing to the eyes, but the reds seem a tad brighter. Landscaping images captured through this camera are excellent thanks to the relatively warmer greens. Skintone contrast is an area of improvement in this camera. It is at higher ISO scales that this camera turns out to be a standout performer.

Conclusion: Should I buy it ?

Whether you are an amateur or a professional photographer, Fujifilm X70 could be your camera of choice. All the basics are excellently captured in this camera and you get offered DSLR-like images. It is priced attractively and light on your pocket too.

  • The Good :
APS-C format sensor is of high quality, the touchscreen tilts and the exposure controls are traditional in nature
