The 3-Minute Google WiFi Review
Google’s Takes on WiFi
By Graeme Messina | September 25, 2018
Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5 ● Speed 4/5
Seamless WiFi integration throughout your house or apartment, good wall penetration, dual 2.4GHz/5GHz bands, wireless mesh connectivity, these are but a few great features. Add to that the easy to use Google WiFi app, useful features such as a WiFi scheduler and kill switch, and you have an easy to use WiFi solution for the whole family.
While there is 802.11g/n/ac support, but it only goes up to AC1200 2x2. This means that it does not meet or exceed 3x3 AC1750 or AC1900. This is not a massive issue for most people thought: as it is normally the enthusiast/hobbyist market that needs such features. But, if you happen to be one of those that need blazing fast WiFi at the highest transfer speeds, then this is a consideration that you will need to be aware of.
Is it for you?
Do you like WiFi? Do you hate ugly WiFi routers? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you will love the Google WiFi product offering. There are style elements that you would be forgiven for thinking are very similar to Apple, but with more of a hockey puck kind of shape. It fits with most décor and looks great.
Meet Google WiFi
The way that the Google WiFi access points connect to one another is impressive, and lets you configure them once, and then forget all about them. The central LED indicator can be adjusted via the app, or turned off altogether if the lighting is clashing with your décor. Google has done a lot of research ensuring that the Google WiFi stands up to the rigors of style conscious home owners, and it shows.
What we like
The effortless connectivity of these units has to be the best part about these devices. Simply setup and forget. Easy as that. The application will let you know how well the access points are communicating with one another, as well as your current and past internet speeds.
Data utilization is also available via the app, as well as current user information such as devices connected, signal strength, and much more. Feel like sharing your WiFi with visitors? You can create a guest network that allows them to connect to the internet via a segmented network, making your existing network devices undiscoverable, and protected from prying eyes.
The power connectors to the access points are handled power simple USB C tyle charge connectors, and each access point has 2xEthernet connections built in. This means that you can use the Google WiFi units to expand your wired network via the mesh system that it provides, which is pretty neat.
What we don’t like
There is not much to not like about these units if we’re being honest, but some people might not appreciate everything about them. Style and shape have come under criticism from some people that say that the Google WiFi units look like hockey pucks.
There is also a lack of advanced functions that power users would appreciate, so don’t expect this to be a technically advanced piece of hardware for enthusiasts to tweak and play around with.
Should you buy it?
If you don’t know much about WiFi setup and want a reliable and super fast internet connection via your wireless network, then this is for you. It doesn’t matter if you are a part of the Apple or Android ecosystem, have a PC or a Mac, or even if you have Amazon based products. Google WiFi is the conduit through which all wireless devices can communicate, and communicate well.
