Huawei Mate 10 Pro Review

The 3-Minute Huawei Mate 10 Pro Review

Some risks pay off while others don't

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4.5/5 ● Value: 4/5

The Best:

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is probably the best phone Huawei has ever made. It gives you top-notch performance, some of the best battery life that you can get, a big screen, an awesome camera, and integrated artificial intelligence all inside a stylish design. This makes the Mate 10 Pro a unique and intriguing high-end smartphone.

The Bugs:

Huawei has always struggled to make their software user-friendly and the Mate 10 Pro is no exception. Also, the display doesn’t measure up to other premium smartphones and the omission of a headphone jack, wireless charging capabilities, and microSD slot are disappointing.

Is it for you?

If you’re interested in a unique high-end phone that features AI technology, a ton of power, class-leading battery life, and a great camera, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is worth a look. If you’re an amateur smartphone photographer or someone who loves to customize their phone, you should really check it out. The phone takes some risks and has several drawbacks but it has managed to set itself apart in a sea of similar-looking, (sometimes) uninspired competitors.

“The Huawei Mate 10 Pro takes a lot of risks and, because of that, it’s not for everyone.”

Meet the Huawei Mate 10 Pro

Huawei has set their eyes on the Western market as they aim to compete with the bigger international smartphone players like Apple and Samsung. While they’re still not nearly as recognizable as other major smartphone brands, the Chinese manufacturer is taking a different (and risky) approach to their smartphones in hopes that their unique products will help them to stand out from the crowd.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is the latest in their line of Mate phones and includes some interesting AI technology that could very well mark the start of truly “smart” smartphones. That said, it remains to be seen whether Huawei can use this technology to capture the attention of customers.

What we like

The first feature of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro that's worth mentioning is its AI system. The phone features a dedicated “neural processing” system that promises to learn your habits as you use the phone to anticipate which apps or features you’ll want to use. The Mate 10 Pro aims to anticipate what you need before you need it. To some, this may come across as a bit creepy but AI is the way of the future and the Mate 10 Pro is one of the first phones to use it. It’s far from perfect and isn’t very noticeable but it’s still a bold step into the future.

Outside of the AI system, the Mate 10 Pro is largely a standard - yet extremely competitive - phone. It's fast and responsive, the camera is fantastic, and its battery is one of the best on the market. The phone’s waterproof design gives it a premium look to go along with its premium performance.

What we don’t like

Although the Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a lot to offer, there’s no doubt that Huawei took some risks with this phone. Straying away from the industry standard of providing a clear upgrade with a “Pro” or “Plus” model, there are actually things that the regular Mate 10 does better than Pro version. The display on the basic model, while smaller, has a higher pixel density that makes it look better. A more expensive model should have better features in every area and the Mate 10 Pro doesn’t.

The Huawei’s EMUI software has failed to catch on in Western markets (so far). The controls aren’t intuitive and it’s difficult for someone who’s new to Huawei phones to understand how everything works. While the responsiveness is generally pretty good, it feels more overcomplicated than it needs to be. The omission of a headphone jack, microSD slot, and wireless charging feature are also disappointing. Though the lack of headphone jack seems to be the trend that many other smartphone companies are following too.

Should you buy it?

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro takes a lot of risks and, because of that, it’s not for everyone. If you’re excited about the opportunities a responsive AI system could give you or want a great camera, awesome battery life, and fantastic performance, it’s definitely worth a look. If AI, a great camera, or customization options aren’t important to you, there are other more intuitive smartphones that could be better suited for you. In general, it’s still an excellent phone. However, it’s also competing against a lot of equally top-notch phones. The smartphone industry has never been more competitive. So, the Mate 10 Pro’s questionable value and weird software have a big impact on whether it’s worth buying.
