The Elite Brewing System K45 is a popular lower-to-mid range coffee home-brewing machine from Keurig. The K in K45 refers to the distribution channel inherent in the machine. The K45 has three cup sizes (6, 8 and 10 ounces) and comes with a removable water reservoir that stores 48 ounces of water in reserve ; enough for up to three full 10 ounce cups. Taking approximately 3 minutes to warm up, the Keurig Elite K45 can brew a fresh, hot cup of coffee in under a minute. A benefit of this machine is that it works with all third-party K-Cup coffee filters, unlike other Keurig machines that only worked with the brand's K-Cups. Some models also come shipped with a Keurig water filter (as indicated on the box) while not necessary for brewing, the filter uses charcoal to remove any distasteful elements from the water.
How does it work ?
It is important to clean the Keurig Elite K45 before the first use. When the machine is plugged in, a green "power" light will turn on the front of the machine. After, wait 3-4 minutes for the machine to warm (indicated by the "Heating" light). Make sure the water reservoir is filled up. Place a cup on top of the drip tray (this tray can be removed to make room for large mugs or travel cups if necessary). When the "heating" light turns off, insert a K-Cup into the holder by lifting the handle of the coffee machine, and pick your desired brew size.
How long does it last ?
The machine is designed for general home use only, not for commercial or office use. The machine comes with a one year warranty against general defects attained through general home use.
How to clean it ?
The manual shipped with the K45 comes with general cleaning and maintenance instructions. Most importantly; remove used K-Cups after every brew. Remove and clean drip tray after use (do not put in dishwasher). Run a full reservoir of water through the machine if it has not been in use for at least a week. The K-Cup holder needs to be cleaned on a weekly basis. The funnel and assembly are both dishwasher safe.
Conclusion: Should I buy it ?
If you are looking for a coffee machine for a personal home use, this Keurig coffee machine is a good choice. The K45 warms up quickly, and brews a cup of coffee very quickly. The large water reservoir is another plus, especially combined with the option of using third party K-Cups, allowing you to brew your own choice of coffee simply and quickly. However, the machine does require quite extensive maintenance. This, combined with limited cup size supported by the K45, could turn off heavier coffee drinkers, who may wish to look at other Keurig models designed for larger and more regular use.
