LG G6 Review

The 3-Minute LG G6 Review

It's back to basics for LG

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 3.5/5

The Best:

The LG G6 has a stunning HDR-10 compatible display that is the centrepiece of its modern design. With dust, water, and drop resistance and a dual wide-angle camera, this phone has a lot going for it.

The Bugs:

One of the biggest issues with the G6 is its high launch price. Other than that, a non-removable battery and a high-definition screen that is only fully utilized in some apps (for the moment) are some other issues.

Is it for you?

If you’re looking for a smartphone with a great display, Instagram-friendly camera, solid performance, and modern design, but don’t like the look or price of the Samsung Galaxy S8, this phone could be for you.

“LG has abandoned the idea of a modular smartphone and focused on the features that consumers actually want.”

Meet the LG G6

The last few years have not been kind to LG’s smartphones. The leather-clad LG G4 received a less-than-favourable reaction from customers and the LG G5, with its system of modular add-ons, confused just about everyone. That may change with the LG G6. Less daring than previous models, the LG G6 is a more traditional smartphone. The thing is, that’s okay. With a sleek design, excellent screen, and solid camera, the LG G6 has a chance to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S8 or Apple iPhone 7.

What we like

LG has abandoned the idea of a modular smartphone and focused on the features that consumers actually want. The first thing that you will notice about the LG G6 is the 5.7-inch display that nearly occupies the entire front panel. By reducing the bezels and opting for an 18:9 aspect ratio, LG has made the display taller without having to make the phone much larger. The display boasts Dolby Vision and HDR-10 technology to give you bright colours and an overall impressive viewing experience.

The phone itself looks great. The LG G6 uses a combination of glass and metal to give it a classic look. The G6’s back panel features durable Gorilla Glass 5 to protect two cameras and a well-placed fingerprint scanner. Durability is a big part of the G6. On top of being dust and water-resistant, the G6 has passed 14 different laboratory durability tests. In simple terms, that means that it should be able to easily survive a fall from the kitchen counter.

With two 13MP cameras, the G6 provides a 120-degree wide-angle lens to capture wider images without sacrificing quality. LG has also introduced “Square Camera.” Aimed at Instagram users, it provides you with four different modes specifically designed to help you take the best Instagrams.

What we don’t like

While the LG G6 is a big improvement over the G5, it has some flaws. Like most phones with taller displays, black bars can appear when watching videos or using apps designed for traditional screens. It’s also worth noting that you will only see the benefits of the HDR-10 technology (for the time being) if you have a Netflix or Amazon Prime Video subscription.

The G6 also uses last year’s Snapdragon processor. It’s still quick, but the newer version of the processor is faster, more efficient, and will support more future improvements. Another feature that LG fans may be disappointed about is the non-removable battery, but it’s the price that you pay for a water-resistant phone.

Should you buy it?

After several unsuccessful attempts, LG has finally created a phone that customers want. With a modern, water-resistant design, excellent screen, and wide-angle cameras full of features, the LG G6 hits the mark. However, despite being a solid phone, there is nothing that stands out about the LG G6. It isn’t fastest and it doesn’t have the most eye-catching screen or the best camera. That’s why the launch price is surprising. It is still an interesting option for those who don’t like the price or design of the Samsung Galaxy S8 or who are just looking for a change. However, it will be a far more appealing option after a price drop, which generally happens quite quickly with LG phones. For users of the LG G5, the G6 takes many of the best things about the G5 and places them in a more refined package. If you’re looking to upgrade and want to stick with LG, it will be worth it after the post-launch price drop.
