Logitech G29 Racing Wheel Review

Nobody does it better than Logitech when it comes to game controllers. They have been the industry leaders for quite some time and this time around, they have the Logitech G29 Racing Wheel which succeeds the Logitech G27. Its predecessor was a huge success and so naturally we would expect the Logitech G29 to be a better G27. However, it will all depend on your personal preferences. To be begin with, it’s only fair to point out the difference between these two simulations.

Given that the G27 came out in 2009, you would expect a lot of changes in six years. However, there are some things that still remain the same. The G29 has the same wheel drip points, stitching, geometry and size as the G27. Moreover, the pedal platform was directly borrowed from the G27. However there are a few things that have changed. As you know, the G27 came with its own gear shifter; this feature was left out on the G29. You have to spend extra to get a 6 speed gear shifter for your G29. . If you already own a G27 gear shifter, you could cut the costs and still use it on your new G29 as it’s compatible. However, the G29 shifter is a bit improved.

A few changes have been done to the pedals as well; for instance, Logitech added some rubber on the brake pedal to give it a real world feel. Basically, it makes sure that you feel the resistance of a real brake pedal. The button layout has also been changed as well. They rearranged some buttons and included a few more as well. They also played with some colors which I doubt will be very pleasing to gamers. Now you would easily use the G29 on your PS4 as well as the Xbox One. The G29’s Xbox one counterpart is called the G920. Although you could theoretically argue that the G27 can be used on the PS4 or Xbox One, it’s not yet rated. Finally, the Logitech team added the Hall-Effect sensors that every other manufacturer is using to make high end gaming controls.
All in all, without these few changes, the G29 is just a G27 considering all the other aspects such as mechanics, gearing system and all. However, the additions could affect the quality of game play especially the new hall-effect sensors. In fact, the Logitech G29 Racing Wheel is marketed as the driving force due to these new sensors.

At the end of the day, you will have to make a choice and given the price tag, the Logitech G29 Racing Wheel is designed for a specific group of gamers and they are the only ones who can decide whether the wheel is really worth the money. Remember, there are additional costs to the Logitech G29 Racing Wheel like the gear shift and a strong pedal given the new driving force. If you like the G27 and don’t feel like you need the extra accuracy and the driving force, you could save up for a better update in the future.
