The 3-Minute Motorola Moto G5 Plus Review
The budget smartphone to beat

Features & Design: 3.5/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 5/5
With the Motorola Moto G5 Plus, you'll get a phone that gives you good performance, a lot of storage, an accurate fingerprint scanner, a quick charging battery, and a camera that's the best in its category all at an awesome price.
Budget phones often have to make sacrifices somewhere. With large bezels, weak speaker sound, lack of video stabilization, and a micro-USB charging/syncing port (which is slower than the newer USB-C ports), the Moto G5 Plus is no exception to this rule.
Is it for you?
The Motorola Moto G5 Plus is a budget device but feels like a phone that is two or three times its price. If you want a great phone without having to empty your pocket, this is your best bet. This device delivers excellent performance, takes fantastic photos, and provides all-day battery life without breaking the bank.
“You will forget that you aren’t using a flagship device.”
Meet the Motorola Moto G5 Plus
The Motorola Moto G5 Plus is the latest addition to Motorola’s G line of smartphones. The Moto G line is known for its high-quality, low-cost devices. Moto G5 Plus is no exception. It provides great day-to-day performance and excels at the basics. It is fast and responsive, the screen is sharp and bright, the fingerprint scanner works great, and the device has a nice metallic finish. It even has a headphone jack, which is no longer a given. With this phone, you will forget that you aren't using a flagship device.
What we like
Although you aren't dishing out a lot of cash for the Motorola Moto G5 Plus, there is plenty to like about it. Apart from its large internal storage capacity, it can also be expanded further using a microSD card so taking a lot of photos and storing your music library isn’t a problem. The chipset and a sizable amount of RAM ensures that the phone is quick and snappy. Switching apps and basic functions, such as messaging and browsing, can be done without any hiccups. The camera produces brilliant images and sharp 4K videos. Gestures can also be used to open the camera and control the flashlight without unlocking the device. It’s a cool feature that saves you from having to unlock the phone every time you want to take a photo. Finally, the inclusion of a fast and accurate fingerprint scanner and fast charging tops off what is already an impressive phone.
What we don’t like
While there may be a lot to like, the Moto G5 Plus isn't perfect. The screen is bordered by huge bezels that make the phone larger than other phones with a similar screen size. This makes one-handed operation difficult if you have small hands. While the speakers are front-facing, meaning that the sound is directed towards you, the sound isn’t very loud and lacks bass. The phone also uses a micro-USB connector for charging and data transfer instead of the reversible Type-C connector. This means the Moto G5 Plus will be incompatible with the slew of upcoming USB-C accessories. There is also a lack of stabilization when recording 4K video so videos come out a bit shaky if you are shooting on the go.
Should you buy it?
The Motorola Moto G5 Plus is a no-frills device. It doesn't go overboard to stand out and while it isn’t the showstopper like the Galaxy S8 or the iPhone 7 are, it does the basics almost as well and is only a third of the price. Its main drawbacks are its bezels and speaker, but it is also a massive step up in terms of design and build quality when compared to last year's Moto G4. If you don't mind the sacrifice in looks and speaker quality, this is the perfect phone for anyone who wants a great camera and solid performance at an affordable price.
