OnePlus 6 Review
The 3-Minute OnePlus 6 Review
OnePlus 6 Equals a Great Phone
By Graeme Messina | September 6, 2018
The Specifics:
Features & Design: 4.5/5 ● Performance: 5/5 ● Value: 5/5 ● Sound Quality 4/5
The Best:
One Plus has come a long way in recent years, and their new flagship model shows off just how well the company can make a decent smart phone. Side by side comparisons with big brand names like Samsung and Apple are now not only possible, but necessary. We have a phone with an excellent screen, good camera, and very surprising system internals, which makes for a nippy and responsive device.
The Bugs:
Some people might not appreciate the “borrowed” notch on the screen that looks suspiciously similar to the iPhone X, but as so many manufacturers are doing it, we can notch that up to competitiveness. Another aspect that might annoy some people is the fact that the screen resolution is only HD and not 4k.
Is it for you?
If you are looking for an Android phone with a good battery, decent screen and usable camera, then yes definitely. The 3,300mAh battery is also a good selling point on this device, which should see the phone survive for a full day, which is surprising given the size of this device, which is around 6.2 inches.
Meet the OnePlus 6
The OnePlus 6 is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, with an Octa-core CPU and Adreno 630 GPU. RAM comes in 2 variants; 6GB and 8GB version, giving it a lot of memory considering the phone’s market placement and pricing. This is excellent value for money, and is certainly an option for people that want a flagship phone, without a flagship price point.
What we like
The Optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen is clear, crisp and bright, with splash resistance and good viewing angles, with 16M colors. The screen resolution is 1080x2270, which is about 402 PPI on the pixel density front.
Storage comes in the form of either a 128GB or 256GB storage capacity, and the on-board cameras are quite respectable too. The front facing selfie camera is mind boggling 16MP camera, while the rear dual camera setup is comprised of a 16MP and a 20MP, with dual LED flash, HDR and panoramic photo modes.
Color options that are available are Midnight Black, Mirror Black, Silk White, and Amber Red. The charger adapter is USB type C and supports quick charging, aslo known as dash charging.
What we don’t like
As with all claims of water proofing in electronics, one would expect and IP rating (Ingress Protection) that would give us a greater understanding of what the devices limitations and capabilities are. Without this, it is difficult to test.
Although there is plenty of on-board storage on this device, some people will probably not enjoy the fact that this device comes with no SD Card slot. It isn’t a deal breaker by any means, but having upgradable storage is something that most people would have liked to have seen on an Android device such as this.
Should you buy it?
This phone is really affordable if you factor in all of the features and qualities that it brings to the table. It has fantastic storage, excellent cameras, amazing fast charge tech, and good looks and a premium feel. It is very easy to recommend this phone based on those factors alone, but when you also consider the low pricing on this unit when compared to similarly featured devices, it becomes and easy purchasing decision.
