The 3-Minute Razer Phone Review
A gamer's paradise

Features & Design: 3.5/5 ● Performance: 5/5 ● Value: 3.5/5
Known for their gaming PCs, Razer’s first foray into the smartphone market gives you a phone that has exceptional performance, multi-day battery life, an excellent screen, and some of the most powerful speakers you can find on a smartphone.
There are a few unfortunate drawbacks to this powerful phone. You’ll have a hard time seeing the screen in direct sunlight, its software is outdated (for now), and the camera’s photo quality is quite poor for such an expensive phone. The Razer’s lack of water resistance is another issue since more and more phones are including this feature.
Is it for you?
This is a phone that was designed for gamers. If you’re an at-home gamer and want to keep playing on the go, this phone was made for you. However, if you’re not really into mobile games, the Razer is far less appealing. It will give you fantastic performance and great battery life but with its poor camera and lack of water resistance, there are better, more well-rounded phones that you can pick up for a similar price.
“As long as you’re not expecting the performance of an iPhone X or Galaxy Note 8, you’ll probably be more than happy with what you’ll get from the Mi A1.”
Meet the Razer Phone
Since its beginnings back in 2005, Razer has been making a name for itself in the gaming community. They’re now known for creating some excellent gaming computers and accessories. As the prevalence of mobile games continues to grow, it only makes sense that Razer would try to capitalize. After purchasing the failing phone brand, Nextbit, in 2017, Razer set out to create their first phone. The result is the Razer Phone. It’s a powerhouse that has some of the best technical specs you can find on an Android phone.
While Razer is a big name when it comes to PC gaming, it remains to be seen whether they can translate their success in PC gaming to the increasingly competitive smartphone market.
What we like
One of the biggest draws of the Razer Phone is its performance. The hardware was designed with gamers in mind. So, it’s safe to say that its performance is fantastic. As mobile games are getting more and more demanding, it takes a phone with some serious hardware to handle them. You can rest assured that the Razer Phone will be able to effortlessly run any game you want to play.
The Razer also features a set of powerful speakers that produce some seriously impressive sound (which is perfect for listening to the soundtracks of your favourite games). They’re probably the best pair of speakers that you’ll be able to find on a smartphone right now.
The screen is also great. It has an incredibly high refresh rate. That means that it’s able to play all sorts of games and videos without any choppiness. It also has a huge battery that will easily last you more than a day on a single charge (if you’re not playing games 100% of the time).
What we don’t like
Unfortunately, the Razer Phone has some pretty major drawbacks. One of the most glaring issues is its camera. For a phone at this price point, its camera is noticeably worse than those on other phones in its price range. The Razer is meant for gaming rather than photography. Still, it’s a big flaw that Razer has failed to address (Update: Camera updates may be on their way in the future).
Another issue that does have an effect on gaming is the display’s poor visibility in sunlight. If you’re inside, the screen is great. However, if you’re walking around outside during the day, it can be difficult to see the screen sometimes.
The lack of water resistance is definitely disappointing given the fact that most phones offer some type of waterproofing. The Razer also runs an older version of Android. Given Razer’s focus on performance, it’s a little surprising and disappointing.
Should you buy it?
If you’re a serious mobile gamer, the Razer Phone was made for you. You won’t find another phone that will give you a better gaming experience. It’s powerful, the screen gives you a smooth picture, it has some amazing battery life, and the speakers are incredible.
If you’re more of a general user, you won’t need all the power that this phone will give you. With its lacklustre camera, poor screen visibility, and lack of waterproofing, there are some pretty major flaws. When you compare it to other high-end phones, this phone is a questionable buy if you’re not constantly playing graphically-demanding games.
