Sony Alpha A6000 / 16-50mm & 55-210mm Kit Review

Some enthusiasts might mourn the demise of the Sony NEX-6, but the majorities will its replacement. The Sony Alpha a6000 / 16-50mm & 55-210mm Kit is an overall better camera than its predecessor. As its predecessor was one of the best contenders to pose a threat to SLRs, you would even expect better from the Sony Alpha a6000 / 16-50mm & 55-210mm Kit.

The A6000 is similar to its predecessor and only a few things have changed when you have a look at it for the first time. A few changes have been done here and there on its appearance, button arrangement and the construction materials. This time round you will enjoy an aluminum shell in place of the magnesium alloy used in the NEX-6. However, you will still enjoy your favorite Electronic Viewfinder, a pop up flash, hot shoe, command dial and mode dial among others. However, the hand grip seems to be a bit bigger than that of its predecessor. All in all, there is good balance between the compact design and the ergonomics.

When you are done with the outside, there are more changes in the inside. It's a pity that you won't have to charge your battery when the other is in use. However, the overall quality has improved as you can now shoot for extra hours. What's even striking is its resolution makeover. It has changed from the 16MP to a stunning 24MP and you will notice more face detect AF points in the sensor. You would expect an SLR to have phase detect AF but not a CSC but Sony did it with the A6000. This means that you will get up to 11 frames per second speeds. This is something to write home about seeing that some SLRs that cost more than triple the A6000 could do up to 6 frames per second.

When it comes to video output quality, there is a significant improvement from its predecessor. However, the camera does not have an in built mic but the hot-shoe would come in handy for an external stereo microphone. The quality is close to the Panasonic Lumix G series and that is something that you would be happy about considering the price of the A6000.

The image quality is excellent. You will experience more detail and minimal noise as compared to the other cameras in the NEX series. Although it doesn't match up with the leaders in the CSC category such as the Fujifilm X-E2, it' something that will impress any serious photographer.
So should you get one of these? Well, if you are in the market for a decent CSC, then the answer should be Yes. The Sony Alpha a6000 / 16-50mm & 55-210mm Kit beats all its competition in the same price range hands down. The only camera that challenges the a6000 is the Fujifilm X-M1 which doesn't have a viewfinder. The A6000 is a worthy purchase as it can go head to head with some top SLRs from Nikon and Canon when it comes to image noise levels.
