Sony Xperia XA1 Review

The 3-Minute Sony Xperia XA1 Review

Good camera, bad picture

The Specifics:

Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4/5 ● Value: 4/5

The Best:

Sony took a mid-range smartphone and added some unique features that set it apart from the other phones on the market. By introducing compatibility with Sony's other products, like the PS4, the Xperia XA1, with a fantastic camera and compact design, provides you with a different kind of experience.

The Bugs:

The screen, while bright, has a lower 720p resolution despite 1080p HD displays becoming the industry standard. The lower screen picture quality is noticeable. It also lacks a fingerprint scanner and has disappointingly bad battery life.

Is it for you?

The Sony Xperia XA1 is a solid Android smartphone that provides a lot of value to certain customers. PlayStation junkies will be thrilled about the in-game communication feature while amateur photographers will be thrilled with the elegant design and quality camera at a budget price.

“It manages to provide some decent performance and features (especially the camera) despite its lower price.”

Meet the Sony Xperia XA1

While Sony is a technology giant, they’ve generally been overlooked when it comes to their smartphones. The Xperia XA1 marks a strategic move to offer a smartphone with great features at an affordable price.

The demand for mid-range smartphones only continues to grow, so Sony's choice to enter this market may pay off in the long run. There’s no doubt that the Xperia XA1 provides some good features at a great price, but it remains to be seen whether it will appeal to consumers.

What we like

There are several things that this phone has going for it. One of the biggest positives of the Sony Xperia XA1 is the camera. The back of the phone features a 23-megapixel camera that is one of the absolute best configurations in its price range. The picture quality is generally fantastic and the phone is a great choice for shutterbugs.

The other major draw to the Xperia XA1 is its affordable price. You’ll get a solid, elegant-looking mid-range smartphone at a decent price, making it the good option for those on a budget. The phone’s compact design allows it to easily fit in your pocket while the integration with PlayStation 4s makes it an appealing option for gamers.

What we don’t like

As with any budget smartphone, tradeoffs must be made in exchange for a great price. For this phone, the screen is where the biggest comprise occurred. While bright and easily viewable, the display only has a 720p resolution that makes its picture quality noticeably worse when compared to other phones in its price range. Battery life is also very important for phones nowadays. Acting as many peoples' the main way to connect with the world, having a phone that can last all day is crucial. The Sony Xperia XA1 loses points here for its poor battery life.

Lastly, the exclusion of a fingerprint scanner is a bit annoying. With how convenient unlocking your phone with your thumb is, it’s disappointing to see the feature omitted in the Xperia XA1. While not a deal breaker, it’s easy to find yourself missing this added perk.

Should you buy it?

The Sony Xperia XA1 is one of the better choices when shopping for a budget Android phone. It manages to provide some decent performance and features (especially the camera) despite its lower price. PS4 gamers will be able to take advantage of the integration between the phone and the console. If you’re a gamer or amateur photographer who can get past a lackluster display and poor battery life, the Sony Xperia XA1 is worth considering.
