Features & Design: 4/5 ● Performance: 4.5/5 ● Value: 3.5/5 ● Battery 4.5/5
The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is a small phone that is big on features. With impressive performance and a solid build, it’s a durable phone that can keep up with the best of them.
While the Sony Xperia XZ1 is certainly impressive, you’ll pay a premium for the device. The lack of a fingerprint sensor and a below-average camera also hold the phone back.
Is it for you?
If you’re looking for a device that is big on performance yet small enough to fit comfortably in your pocket, the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact may be right for you. With only a few drawbacks and specifications that outclass many larger phones, it’s a unique device that proves bigger isn’t always better.
Meet the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
While Sony is a huge technology company with a solid presence in the video game, television, and audio market, they have struggled to capture the attention of the smartphone scene. Their phones, while generally pretty impressive, struggle to compete with offerings from cell phone giants like Apple and Samsung. With the Xperia XZ1 Compact, the company is taking a different approach. Offering a smaller device with the same big performance, it offers a unique take on the luxury flagship that can still compete with the best of them.
What we like
The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is an impressive and unique take on the high-end smartphone. Perhaps the biggest draw of the device is in its compact design. As companies seek to maximize screen space, phones are becoming bigger and bigger, to the point that it’s now difficult for most people to operate a device with just one hand. The build quality hasn’t suffered despite the phone being smaller, and still manages to include expandable storage - a feature that has been cut out of many Android phones.
The performance of the phone is incredibly impressive, and you’ll enjoy fluid and fast operation regardless of what you’re looking to do. The IP68 certification also ensures that your phone won’t be ruined if you were to drop it in a puddle, for instance, adding more durability to an already durable phone.
What we don’t like
There are a few drawbacks to the phone, the most significant of which is probably the price. While the phone has some impressive specifications, it doesn’t have the specifications to warrant a near $600 price tag. While it’s competing in a different market from, say, the iPhone X or Galaxy S8, it’s in an awkward position between a mid-range and high-end price.
Also unfortunate is a lack of a fingerprint sensor in US models, which is a security feature we’ve come to expect on the majority of our phones. The camera quality is also pretty poor, which is a major drawback considering how often people use their device to capture the world around them.
Should you buy it?
There’s no doubt that the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact is a niche device. If you’re one of those people who is turned off by how large phones have become, it may be the right device for you. A small size can be both a benefit and a drawback, and will likely be the main reason people opt for this phone. Overall, we feel that we can recommend the Xperia XZ1 Compact as a solid phone with a compact design and impressive performance.
